What is Total Gym?

Total Gym has been a popular name in the fitness industry for several decades now and they have become popular as they provide a full body workout in the comfort of your own home.

They are one of the most versatile indoor home fitness equipment systems that you can buy.

While Total Gym models have evolved over the years, their fundamental concept remains the same: utilizing your body weight and gravity as the resistance.

Every model consists of an adjustable base and a sliding glide board where you sit or lie. They also all incorporate a set of pulleys with handles for performing various exercises.

What sets each model apart (as we’ll delve into below) are the number of resistance levels, included attachments, and overall frame stability. Prices for these gyms vary greatly depending on the chosen model.

Total Gym Apex G5

Now, let’s focus on the Apex G5, which is the focus of our discussion here.

Priced just under $500, it falls into the more affordable range compared to the luxurious GTS model which is typically found in rehabilitation clinics, and th premium home models like the XLS and FIT.

Now, let’s talk about the pros of the Apex G5.

You’ll have access to over 80 exercises, providing a safe and low-impact full-body workout.

With 10 levels of resistance, you can tailor the intensity to your liking.

The package also includes five attachments, a nutritional guide, an exercise guide, and access to Total Gym TV.

As a bonus, no assembly is required, and it conveniently folds for storage. And let’s not forget the great price!

The only real downside is the relatively short 1 year warranty that comes with the Apex G5.

Overall, Total Gym’s Apex G5 offers an impressive range of features at an amazing price. It’s a great way to achieve your fitness goals for less!

Total Gym Apex G5 Exercises

Let’s dive into the diverse range of exercises you can perform on the Total Gym G5, a key feature that varies across different models.

The total number of exercises available primarily depends on the attachments included with each model, with more attachments equating to greater workout variety.

The Apex G5 proudly boasts over 80 exercises that you can enjoy, which is truly impressive when compared to traditional home gyms equipped with weight stacks or plates.

This remarkable number aligns well with other Total Gym models that come with similar attachments.

Having access to 80 exercises is absolutely fantastic. You’ll find a wide array of upper body, lower body, and core strengthening movements to choose from.

The G5 offers a greater range of workout variety compared to the slightly pricier Total Gym Supreme, and it matches most of the higher-end models in terms of exercise options.

Now, you might be skeptical about the claim of 80 exercises, but keep in mind that they count single-leg variations separately from double-leg exercises (such as squats). By doing this, the total count of exercises quickly accumulates.

Furthermore, just like all Total Gym models, the pulley systems provide a full range of motion, enabling you to perform various upper and lower body movements.

Overall, when it comes to exercise variety, the Apex G5 excels.

It is just as versatile as nearly all other models, except for the very expensive GTS.

So you can experience a fantastic range of workouts at a bargain price!

Total Gym Apex G5 Resistance Levels

Let’s talk about the resistance levels on the Total Gym, which refer to the height adjustments on the slide board.

When you adjust the slide board to a higher level (more vertical), you increase the resistance you feel. This occurs because you’re lifting a higher percentage of your body weight, thanks to gravity. On the other hand, lowering the height decreases the resistance.

I must say, the pulley/slide board system is absolutely ingenious. It not only offers a wide variety of workout options but also provides a gentle way to exercise using your own body weight.

And when I say gentle, I mean low impact, as you simply glide along the slide board while engaging the pulleys.

The G5 offers 10 levels of resistance which is very impressive considering its low price.

This exceeds the Total Gym XLS and all the previous budget-friendly models with numerical names (except for the 1900).

Having more resistance levels is advantageous as it allows you to fine-tune the intensity of your workouts and provides room for growth as you become stronger.

While some more expensive models have 12 levels of resistance (the GTS boasts 22), the G5 is not far behind.

When it comes to resistance, this model is surprisingly generous compared to its more expensive counterparts. So you can enjoy a versatile and challenging workout without breaking the bank.

What attachments come with the Total Gym Apex G5?

When purchasing a Total Gym, it’s important to pay close attention to the attachments that are included. It’s one of the big differences between models and they can vary in terms of both type and quantity.

Let’s take a look at the attachments that come with the Apex G5:

  1. Squat stand: This crucial attachment enables you to perform squatting and lunging exercises, and the larger the stand, the better.
  2. Wing attachment: With a wide set of handles, this attachment allows you to engage in a variety of pull-up and pressing movements.
  3. Leg pull accessory: This accessory allows for various leg exercises, including hip extensions and abduction.
  4. Dip bars: Attaching to the frame, these bars enable you to target your triceps, pecs, and delts through exercises like dips.
  5. Training deck with holder: This attachment conveniently holds your training guide, providing easy access throughout your workouts.

In addition to the above attachments, your purchase includes a nutritional guide, exercise guide, manual, workout DVD, 2 floor mats, and access to Total Gym TV, a streaming platform for Total Gym workouts.

One notable difference between the G5 and the slightly more expensive Supreme model lies in the attachment department. The Supreme comes with the popular Ab Crunch attachment, whereas the G5 does not.

Overall, I’m impressed with the number of attachments included with this budget-friendly model. It provides great value for the price, offering a versatile and comprehensive workout experience.

Is Total Gym G5 Easy to Assemble?

When it comes to assembly, Total Gyms have a cool feature—they come out of the box ready to go. There’s no intricate assembly process involved; you simply need to unfold them.

The unfolding process is pretty straightforward, although it might take a few tries to get fully comfortable with it. Once you’re familiar with it, you can easily fold and unfold the gym within minutes.

After unfolding, you can add the necessary attachments for your workout without needing any tools. The attachments can be quickly and easily attached or detached using push pins.

Overall, setting up your G5 right out of the box should be a breeze.

What is the Total Gym Apex G5 Weight Capacity?

Impressively, the Apex G5 has a maximum weight capacity of 375 lb. This is good for any fitness equipment, and it’s particularly impressive considering the affordability of this gym.

When compared to other models, the G5 surpasses the Supreme by 100 lb and falls just 25 lb short of the XLS, which costs twice as much as the G5.

With such a high weight capacity, this gym is capable of safely accommodating most users.

Does The Total Gym Apex G5 have a Warranty?

The Total Gym Apex G5 comes with a 1 year, all-inclusive warranty.

Admittedly, this warranty is a little on the short side. However, considering the low price, it’s not as bad as it may initially seem.

If you opt for a more expensive model, you’ll receive a better warranty (for example, the XLS and Fit models come with lifetime frame warranties).

That being said, all Total Gyms are well-built, and as long as you use them properly, the likelihood of encountering any issues or breakdowns is quite low.

Total Gym Apex G5 Review – Final Thoughts

As a long-time fan of Total Gyms, my enthusiasm for them has only grown over time as I use them more (and my body gets older).

These gyms offer comprehensive full-body strengthening and conditioning workouts while being gentle enough for individuals of all ages and fitness levels.

I am so impressed with the Apex G5.

In my opinion, the G5 surpasses expectations with its generous selection of resistance levels and attachments at such a low price point.

The inclusion of the larger squat stand, along with the wing and dip attachments, is really impressive and makes this incredible value.

It will also make your workouts more enjoyable as they add so much variety to your home workout.

Overall, the Apex G5 is a definite winner.

It’s an excellent purchase for anyone new to Total Gym or anyone who just loves getting great value for money.

It’s a really smart investment that won’t disappoint.
