This NordicTrack EXP 14i review will take a look at one of their more moderately priced treadmills, but don’t be put off by the low price —it’s got some pretty cool features.

First off, that 14″ HD touchscreen console is hard to ignore and when paired with the iFit streaming capabilities, it’s a winning combo.

The 3.5 CHP motor packs a punch. It’s got as much power as the higher-priced Commercial Treadmills from NordicTrack. Impressive, right?

It’s versatile too and the NordicTrack EXP 14i can decline to a -3% slope as well as incline to 12 degrees. That means you can add some variety to your workouts or simulate real-world conditions.

Now, keep in mind that the EXP 14i may not be as heavy-duty as some of NordicTrack’s higher-end models, and in an ideal world the rollers would be a tad bigger.

But overall, it’s a solid choice if you want a mix of cool console features and great performance without breaking the bank.

But before you make your final call, let me break it down for you. In this NordicTrack EXP 14i review, I’ll cover all the nitty-gritty details, specs, and features of this treadmill. Plus, I’ll throw in a comparison to other treadmills in the same price range to see how it measures up.

By the time you finish reading, you’ll have a clear idea of whether the NordicTrack EXP 14i is the perfect fit for your home gym.

Our Verdict

NordicTrack EXP 14i

This treadmill feels great to run on with both incline and decline settings.

It has a nice 14 inch touchscreen for iFit streamed workouts and folds so that it doesn’t take up too much space.

Recommended.

NordicTrack EXP14i Treadmill Review

NordicTrack is one of the big names in home fitness, and their treadmills are super popular.

They’ve got a bunch of treadmills to choose from, but they all have one thing in common—they work with iFit.

And not only that, they all come with fancy touchscreen consoles that are just waiting for you to try out the iFit workouts.

Personally, I think it’d be nice if NordicTrack offered a few treadmills without the streaming stuff for folks who aren’t into it or so you could safe a few bucks and use your own phone or tablet.

But nope, they’ve gone all-in on iFit and streaming workouts, and it doesn’t look like that’s changing anytime soon.

So, if you’re into streaming workouts, NordicTrack is a great brand to check out. But if you’re not interested in following along with instructors, it might not be the best option for you.

Now, let’s talk about the EXP 14i, which is the top model in their “EXP Series.” They’ve also got the EXP 10i and EXP 7i.

Right now, the EXP 14i is selling for around $1700.

NordicTrack EXP14i with iFit

One of the main reasons to consider the EXP 14i is so that you have a treadmill that seamlessly integrates with iFit.

We absolutely love iFit! This fitness subscription platform has a massive library of classes led by top-notch instructors, and they’re always adding new ones.

What really blows us away are their outdoor classes. They film in stunning locations all around the world. The trainer takes you through picturesque landscapes, and the camera pans to show off the surroundings. It’s like you’re actually there!

The graphics on the screen are crisp, highlighting the excellent film quality.

Their indoor classes are equally impressive. Filmed in professional studios, the production quality is top-notch.

Our only wish is that they incorporated music into the classes instead of just having it in the background. But hey, with their wide range of stations, you’re bound to find the tunes that get you grooving.

But here’s the real kicker—the tech features of iFit are pretty darn cool. With their AutoAdjust technology, you can seamlessly follow along with the instructor.

When they cue you to incline or encounter an uphill landscape, the treadmill automatically adjusts to match the grade. It’s pretty sweet and takes the hassle out of changing levels yourself, so you can focus on your workout.

Of course, you can always bypass this and manually adjust the treadmill whenever you want.

The NordicTrack EXP 14i treadmill is super interactive, just like other iFit machines we’ve tested.

One bummer is that the SmartBeat Forearm heart rate monitor is sold separately.

But hey, that’s the case with other NordicTrack treadmills and even some from other brands.

On the bright side, the ActivePulse heart rate training feature is designed to keep your heart rate in check by adjusting the treadmill to match the intensity.

Heart rate training is a fantastic tool to avoid overtraining and add variety to your workouts. We just wish the heart rate monitor came included with the NordicTrack EXP 14i Treadmill.

And guess what? iFit isn’t just limited to treadmill classes. You can explore cycling, rowing, strength training, yoga, meditation, and more. It’s like having a whole fitness studio at your fingertips.

Does the NordicTrack EXP 14i work without subscription?

You can use the XEP 14i without a iFit subscription and you even get a few free workouts built in to the machine.

They offer a free version of iFit with a selection of trainer-led classes, preselected onboard workouts, and a manual mode to do your own thing.

You can enjoy these workouts without shelling out extra cash.

NordicTrack XP14i – Console

Let’s talk about the console now.

It features a generous 14″ touchscreen on the NordicTrack EXP 14i that fits seamlessly into the console, which is a fixed large, square piece.

While the screen has a slight tilt adjustment, it doesn’t move around much. But hey, that’s not a big deal. The size of the screen is just right—not too excessive. It doesn’t weigh down the console and cause excessive shaking.

Everything on the screen is crystal clear, and navigating through iFit and the onboard workouts is a breeze. You can easily adjust the incline, speed, fan, and speakers directly on the screen whenever you need to.

Let me tell you, this screen size doesn’t feel restricting or hard to see like on the EXP 7i. It’s a win!

Now, here’s why I really dig this console layout. All the adjustment buttons are right there on the same piece as the screen.

NordicTrack knows how to make their treadmills user-friendly with their console layouts.

Take the numbered buttons on either side of the screen—they’re quick-touch adjustment buttons. Want to hit 10 mph? Press the number on the right. Need a 4% incline? Hit the corresponding number on the left. And with the speed buttons, pressing two back-to-back adjusts the treadmill to specific increments like 4.6 mph. It’s simple and effective.

Of course, the mph and % grade buttons below these are also easy to use when you want to get to specific increments. And don’t forget, just below the screen, you can adjust the speakers and fan.

Speaking of the fan, it may be minimal, but it’s impressive.

It has multiple settings for airflow. Sure, it only points in one direction, but it gives you a good blast no matter your height.

And those speakers—clear, front-facing, and they can go pretty loud. You can control the volume on the screen and even balance the trainer’s voice or music to hear one or the other.

While the screen doesn’t have loads of storage, it has enough space to hold your water bottle, phone, and even a smaller item like headphone earbuds.

There are two cup holders and a small shelf below the screen. The cup holders are similar to those on the Commercial Series treadmills from NordicTrack—they keep my water bottle or phone secure.

Oh, and let’s not forget the device rack below the screen. It’s super convenient for streaming content from your phone or tablet.

Just keep in mind that a larger tablet might block part of the screen, but hey, it’s nice to have the option to watch whatever you want while using the EXP 14i.

NordicTrack EXP 14i Teadmill Review – Running Surface

The running surface of a treadmill is an important factor to consider as it determines the space you’ll have for your workouts. This is particularly significant if you’re larger or taller in stature.

A spacious running surface not only ensures that taller runners don’t have to shorten their stride, but it also enhances overall comfort during workouts. This is why commercial treadmills with larger running surfaces feel so amazing.

Most high-quality home treadmills offer a minimum running surface of 20″ x 60″. With this size, most people can comfortably run at their desired speed without needing to adjust their stride.

In the case of the EXP 14i, it features a 20″ x 60″ running surface.

While some treadmills in this price range may offer an even wider 22″ belt (such as the Horizon 7.4 AT), the 14i provides a sufficiently spacious area for a comfortable experience.

So, there are no concerns in terms of the running surface.

Additionally, the NordicTrack EXP14i treadmill incorporates NordicTrack’s FlexSelect cushioning system, which allows you to customize the level of shock absorption provided by the deck.

This feature offers the flexibility to choose between more cushioning for reduced joint impact or less cushioning to simulate a road-like feel during workouts.

NordicTrack EXP 14i – Weight

NordicTrack doesn’t explicitly provide the assembled weight; instead, they mention the weight of the treadmill when packaged.

To estimate the actual weight, we need to subtract the weight of the packaging, which is typically around 30-40 lbs (although it’s difficult to determine the exact weight of the 14i’s packaging).

Assuming a conservative estimate of subtracting 30 lbs from the in-box weight of 229 lbs, we can estimate that the assembled weight of the 14i is approximately 200 lbs.

Why does weight matter?

Personally, I prefer a treadmill that feels robust and stable, and weight plays a role in achieving this. Heavier treadmills tend to wobble or vibrate less during use.

With an estimated weight of around 200 lbs, the 14i is not the heaviest-duty treadmill in its price range.

For comparison, the Horizon 7.4 AT weighs 318 lbs when assembled, while Sole’s F80 weighs 278 lbs.

So, there are treadmills available for a similar price that offer greater durability and sturdiness.

This is evident when looking at the NordicTrack EXP 14i weight capacity of 300 lbs.

While this limit is sufficient for most individuals, it falls short compared to the 350-375 lb capacities of the aforementioned treadmills.

The NordicTrack EXP14i folding treadmill provides a relatively spacious running surface but is less heavy-duy than other high-performing treadmills in its price range.

NordicTrack EXP14i Review – Motor

We all appreciate having a powerful motor on our treadmill. Generally speaking, a stronger motor is always a good thing.

Stronger motors don’t have to strain as much as weaker ones to deliver the same performance. This means they should provide a smoother experience overall.

Moreover, stronger motors have the advantage of faster acceleration, which can be particularly useful during interval workouts.

Most home treadmills these days are equipped with motors ranging from 2 to 4 HP.

The EXP 14i has a 3.5 CHP motor (the ‘C’ stands for ‘continuous’, indicating the motor’s sustained output over extended periods of time). This places the 14i’s motor at the higher end of what you can expect from a home treadmill in terms of strength.

With a 3.5 CHP motor, the 14i matches the motors found in the previously mentioned 7.4 AT and F80 models (which, by the way, are two of my favorite treadmills in this price range).

The 14i can reach a top speed of 12 mph and a maximum incline of 12%, which are standard features for a treadmill in this price range.

However, what sets the 14i apart is its ability to decline up to -3%. Most treadmills do not offer decline functionality, making this a fairly unique feature, usually only found in NordicTrack and ProForm models.

Training with a decline adds variety to your workouts and can simulate the experience of running or walking downhill, which can be beneficial for road race preparation.

While the motor and incline/decline capabilities of this treadmill are impressive, the roller size leaves something to be desired.

With rollers measuring only 1.9″, they are on the smaller side for this price range.

Rollers are responsible for the belt’s smooth movement, and larger rollers generally result in smoother belt action and less stress on the belt itself.

For comparison, the Sole F80 comes with 2.5″ rollers, while the Horizon 7.4 AT features 2.3″/1.8″ front/rear rollers.

While 1.9″ is common for more affordable treadmills, it is considered small for quality treadmills in this price range. It’s not a dealbreaker per se, but it’s something worth noting.

Overall, I appreciate the robust motor of the 14i, and its ability to train on a decline adds an interesting touch. However, I would have preferred larger rollers. Nevertheless, it’s not a dealbreaker in my opinion.

NordicTrack EXP 14i Review of Features

The NordicTrack EXP 14i Treadmill offers the following features:

  • 14″ HD touchscreen console: The standout feature of this treadmill is its large 14″ HD touchscreen console. It provides an easy-to-view display for accessing all the iFit workouts and other exciting features.
  • iFit compatibility: Access NordicTrack’s streaming service, iFit, with a membership. Enjoy instructor-led workouts, metric tracking, scenic routes, and more. A 30-day free trial of iFit is included with the treadmill purchase, and the membership costs $39/month.
  • Smart Adjust: An exclusive feature available through iFit, Smart Adjust is a customized feature that will automatically scale and adjust your speed/incline, so you can follow along with your iFIT trainer during your workout and stay at your own pace
  • Bluetooth compatibility: The treadmill’s console is Bluetooth-enabled, allowing you to connect compatible headphones and heart rate monitors (heart rate monitor not included).
  • Cooling fan: Stay comfortable during workouts with the built-in cooling fan that provides a refreshing breeze.
  • One-touch controls: Easily and quickly set the desired speed and incline with the convenient one-touch controls.
  • ActivePulse training: By signing up for iFit, you can utilize the ActivePulse training feature. This functionality automatically adjusts the treadmill’s speed to keep your heart rate within your target zone during workouts. Please note that using this feature requires one of NordicTrack’s SmartBeat heart rate monitors, which is sold separately.
  • Water bottle holders: Stay hydrated during your workouts as the treadmill comes equipped with convenient water bottle holders, ensuring there’s plenty of space for your drinks.

NordicTrack EXP 14i – Assembly

Nordictrack 14i reviews like this one need to look into all aspects of the treadmill, including boring things like putting it together!

While the assembly process for the EXP 14i requires a bit more effort compared to some other similar treadmills, I believe that most individuals should be able to handle it without the need for professional assistance.

Like most treadmills, you’ll need to attach the two uprights to the deck and carefully thread the cables through the right upright for connection to the console.

Next, you’ll proceed to attach the handles, console, crossbar, and a few guards—pretty standard stuff.

However, with the 14i, there are a few additional steps involved in attaching and utilizing the piston for folding and unfolding the deck.

Although it’s not a significant issue, it’s worth noting that many treadmills come with this part already pre-assembled.

Overall, NordicTrack provides an easy-to-follow assembly manual, and the process itself should be relatively straightforward.

The 14i folds so that it doesn’t take up too much space when you aren’t using it.

NordicTrack EXP 14i – Warranty

We are getting toward the end of this Nordictrack exp 14i smart treadmill review, so lets take a look at something we all hope we don’t need, the warranty.

The NordicTrack EXP 14i is covered by the following residential warranty:

  • 10-year frame warranty
  • 2-year parts warranty
  • 1-year labor warranty

This warranty is consistent with NordicTrack’s standard coverage for most of their products, and its quality is relative to the price of the item.

Considering the $1700 price tag of the treadmill, I would prefer to see a lifetime guarantee for both the frame and motor, as this is what other top brands like Sole, Horizon, and Spirit are offering.

But, to be fair 10 years is a long time and should be enough for most users.

While a 2-year parts warranty is not terrible, it falls short compared to the 5-year coverage provided by Horizon and Sole.

On the other hand, a 1-year labor warranty is standard across various brands.

Final Thoughts on My Review of NordicTrack EXP 14i

Well, that wraps up my NordicTrack exp 14i treadmill review.

Taking everything into account, I must say that this treadmill has a lot to offer, particularly when it comes to its impressive array of features.

What sets it apart is its powerful motor and remarkable incline/decline capabilities.

My only gripes are related to the warranty and the fact that this treadmill falls a bit on the lighter-duty side for its price range.

But, and it’s a big but. Few treadmills in this prce range can compete with the allure of the 14″ HD touchscreen console and the streaming options provided by the 14i.

So, if you’re seeking an affordable streaming treadmill, the EXP 14i could be an excellent choice.
